Alzheimer’s Is A Major Cause Of Concern
The number six cause of death in America today is Alzheimer’s Disease and this continues to climb the ladder as the aging population itself continues to increase in number. This is a trend that has been steadily on the increase with no cure to be found in the short term. It is now estimated that over 5 million people in the U.S. are having to live with this disease. Very few people realize that this disease was first identified in 1906 by a German physician named Alois Alzheimer. Despite the millions of dollars and years of research spent on this disease there is no known cure and the exact cause has yet to be identified. There is however more information available today from the medical and health community on Alzheimer’s, than at any other time in our history.
Alzheimer’s symptoms to watch for in loved ones
There are now some specific facts known about Alzheimer’s disease that have been confirmed over recent years. Your chances of getting this disease increase as you get older, particularly once you reach beyond 65 years of age. There are also some specific Alzheimer’s symptoms that begin to appear at the early stages of the disease that are now well recognized. The most common of these signs are memory loss, the ability to perform everyday tasks at a normal and functional level, disorientation of time and place, changes in personality, and loss of interest and depression. If any of these symptoms are exhibited by an ‘at risk’ individual, then medical help should be sought. These are the common, initial signs that are seen in patients.
The stages of Alzheimer’s that can develop
At this point it is quite likely that the sequence of Alzheimer’s stages will start to develop over the coming months and even years. Memory ability is perhaps the most notable and many patients will begin to act strangely. Communication problems will occur and the potential sufferer will have difficulty in making everyday decisions that have been quite normal in the past. At this point day to day care and assistance may be required to manage an Alzheimer’s patient’s safety and ensure their wellbeing.
Alzheimer’s treatment possibilities are limited
Alzheimer’s is a neurological disease and is degenerative in nature and progressive. It becomes worse as times goes by. The effects of this disease are irreversible and ultimately the patient will not get better and passes away. It destroys brain cells with no cure and leaves the patient with no means to function at a normal level. At this point the Alzheimer’s patient requires 24/7 care for everything.
The search for better treatment and an eventual cure must go on
Research continues around the globe to tackle this major health problem, but it may be a considerable time yet, before anyone can say they have indeed found a cure or even a successful Alzheimer’s treatment. Nonetheless, it behoves us all to give our full support to organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, who are working tirelessly to overcome the ever increasing global impact of Alzheimer’s Disease.
