With over 5 million people in the United States already diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, many individuals want to know the facts about what Alzheimer’s treatment is available to help the patients with this disorder. It is important to realize that there is no cure for this disease and the affects cannot be reversed. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s most patients die within about eight years according to recent statistics. However it is important to note that some individuals may die within a few months while others hang on for as long as twenty years. In practice, over the past few years there has been some progress with medications that can slow down the progression of the disease and which may help some patients to postpone entry to a long term care facility for months or even years.

Alzheimer’s treatment can include medication

The FDA has approved two types of medication for Alzheimer’s treatment of memory loss both of which have shown positive results. When an individual suffers from Alzheimer’s , brain cells are actually being destroyed. These medications help to stabilize or even slow down the progression of the disease and help the patient reconnect with better cognitive skills. These medications affect the chemicals in carrying messages to the brain and nerve cells. This Alzheimer’s treatment helps, but only works for a limited time.

Cholineesterase helps memory loss

Cholinesterase inhibitors help with memory, language, thinking, and judgement. This class of drug medication is commonly prescribed to help with Alzheimer’s treatment and is generally well tolerated by the sufferer’s cognitive system. These drugs can delay the worsening of symptoms for six to twelve months on about half of the patients who take them.

Memantine aids completion of some tasks

There is also a second type of medication that can help with Alzheimer’s treatment in the later stages of the disease. These are referred to as memantine. These drugs can also help with memory skills, language, reasoning and attention and in some cases have additionally helped a patient to complete simple tasks. This unfortunately is only a temporary solution for some of these symptoms, but is one that is well tolerated by most patients. Some physicians will prescribe both classes of medication to help with Alzheimer’s treatment at all stages of the disorder.

Research into Alzheimer’s treatment continues

Further studies indicate that Alzheimer’s treatment that uses vitamin E in high doses may help patients with the disease but it is paramount that you consult a physician before using vitamin E. with any particular sufferer. There are many research projects and trial studies being conducted to help develop better Alzheimer’s treatment and more effective responses to the disease. The ultimate aim of this research is to find a cure for this disorder that eventually cripples the patient and causes heartbreak for many families, friends, and loved ones. In the meantime however, it is more likely that Alzheimer’s treatment will continue to improve, so as to reduce the discomfort of all concerned.
