My father has Alzheimer’s, has been taken to Emergency and looks beaten up. Help!!!?

Rainbow Asked: My father has Alzheimer’s, has been taken to Emergency and looks beaten up. Help!!!?

My dad has Alzheimers and has been in the nursing home (in the Alzheimer unit) for almost 2 years. He never liked it there, right from day one. To comfort and help him, we went to visit him every single night. The other day, he twisted someone's arm (not even broke it) due to his agitation. The administrator (a very cold-hearted woman), called the police and they escorted him to the ambulance and took him to the Emergency dept. We didn't know this until after the fact. He's now in the hospital, totally bruised up, not able to go to the bathroom, not talkative, etc. He looks like a different man. The day before this happened, he was walking and happy. I feel destroyed because he didn't deserve this treatment. The administrator told us clearly that he can't go back to that nursing home. We have no idea what will happen to him. Oh, and they took him out of the nursing home without his coat, in the cold of winter. What can we do about this? It's horrible, beyond cruel.

theres nothing you can do and it was not cruel. Many times in nursing homes when someone becomes combative it is normal to send them to the hospital so more tests can be run to see if there is something going on other than his Alzheimer's. It could be something as simple as a urinary tract infection which causes confusion and agitation in elderly folks. Or it could be dehydration, a mini stroke, etc. He would have been transferred by ambulance and covered with blankets from the time he was placed on the stretcher until they got him into the emergency room. If there is something abnormal with him right now then of course he is going to act different, not be talkative. I have worked in a hospital for 7 years, 2.5 years as an RN and often times family members become concerned about their elderly mom or dad because they are acting different, or are confused. It happens all the time when they are sent to a new place or when they have an underlying health issue that affects their mental status. Speak with a social worker at the hospital and find a new nursing home in your area.
